Thursday's "Practice" Round
Hilton Head National is a golfing gem. It has been acclaimed for more than 30 years as “the best conditioned layout in the region.” Moreover, it’s routinely rated among the top public courses in South Carolina.
Hall of Fame golfer Gary Player and course architecture award winner Bobby Weed each contributed their distinctive design philosophies here in ways that make every club in your bag important.
Hilton Head National boasts immaculately groomed TifEagle Ultra greens that run fast and true. The opening holes offer several strategic risk-reward challenges: in particular, the Signature 6th, a par 4, bordered its entire fairway by a treacherously close lagoon on the right with dangerous pot bunkers on the left. The back nine is tighter, and rewards players with a good short game.

Friday a.m. Round
Notable golf architect Pete Dye works his magic on the original George W. Cobb and William C. Byrd design and delivers what is considered to be the most scenic course of the Port Royal threesome. Cutting through beautiful magnolias and live oaks almost makes one forget the course still requires a certain level of accuracy.
Highlighted by a challenging quartet of excellent par-three holes, water hazards on several holes and greens well protected by bunkers, Robber’s Row is an excellent course for intermediate golfers. Players will also notice historical markers at tee boxes; the course sits atop what was once an important location in the Civil War.
Friday p.m. Round
Designed by George W. Cobb, the Barony Course at Port Royal Golf Club was one of the first courses on Hilton Head Island. Standing at over 40 years of age, the Barony Course also proves that age is just a number as it continues to receive praise from top golf publications.
Fans of target golf will appreciate everything Barony has to give. The risk-reward approaches to the greens bring some challenges and the small greens that are protected by thick rough and unforgiving bunkers calls for a skillful touch with the mid and short irons. Golfers will quickly realize that the key to this course is accuracy and not length.
